Wileyware FAQ
Why do each of my glasses look slightly different?
My handmade glassware is made with attention to detail and quality. Because each glass is made one at a time, there is inherent variation in height and wall/base thickness. If you are ordering a set I will do my best to make sure the glasses “hang” together in a complementary fashion.
Similarly, the colored dichroic glass at the glass bottom will likely fluctuate to some degree from order to order. It is made in small batches with variation between each “run” of the same color. It’s similar to variation within a dye lot of yarn or fiber.
In certain colors or patterns you may also notice a “crackling effect” of the color at the glass base. This is also normal, caused by the heating of the dichroic glass disk during the blowing process.
How do I care for my Wileyware?
Yes! Your Wileyware glasses CAN go in the dishwasher. We recommend the lower heat dishwasher setting. They are lead-free and the colored glass at the bottom will not fade or change over time. Some people, however, choose to handwash their Wileyware. We recommend handwashing the kaleidoscope glasses.
Do not put the glasses in the microwave. The fabulous colorshifting dichroic glass contains fine metal particles that will excite your microwave.
It's okay to put the glasses in the freezer to chill them for icy beverages. Please do not however, put hot liquids or boiling water into them. Pyrex (borosilicate) glass is the only type of glass that can handle extreme temperature change.
“You would never know that I didn’t just get them. I put them in the dishwasher everyday, I don’t baby them.” Joe S., Greensborough MA
What causes the magical color effects?
We hand blow each glass and melt a specialized dichroic glass piece to the base of each glass (this glass does not come in contact with the contents in the glass.)
Dichroic glass contains vaporized metals which shift color based on the angle and type of lighting on them (similar to the iridescent effect of a peacock feather or the throat of a hummingbird).
When coupled with our special glass-blowing techniques, the combination of the dichroic glass and the glass shape create the dazzling dance of light unique to Wileyware. ENJOY a lifetime of use!
What happens when you put colored beverages in Wileyware?
Part of the fun of Wileyware is playing with the way the base color reflects in different beverages, or with ice and bubbles. With opaque or dark transparent liquids (milk, juice, red wine, beer), the glass bottom looks more sculptural and defined as a sparkling layer.
My personal favorite combinations are 1) the fluted magenta glass with champagne, 2) the “thank you water” glass with seltzer and ice and 3) the mint/gold (aka “Trout Potion No.9”) mini glass with absinthe and ice.
